Ben Nevis is the UK's highest mountain at 1,344m and it towers above Fort William and the surrounding hills of the Mamore's and Grey Coires. It is one of Lochaber's main tourist attractions with over 150,000 people a year making their way to the top for some of the best views in the country if they're lucky.

The easiest route, the 'Mountain path' starts just above sea level and climbs around the Southern flanks of Meall an t-shuide to the halfway lochan and the Red burn, which marks the halfway point. From here the path zig-zags its way up the upper part of the mountain to reach the vast and empty plateau. It's not over there though, a short walk from the start of the plateau and you'll reach the summit, with its trig point and the ruins of the observatory which were manned 24 hours a day, year-round between 1883 and 1904.

In winter the Mountain path is a far more serious place as snow and ice cover the track and make navigation difficult and crampons and ice axe are usually required to travel safely. A Ben Nevis Winter Guide can guide you safely to the summit and back as well as teaching you the skills required to do so.

The other side of the mountain, 'the North face' has some of the largest cliffs in Britain and some of the longest rock and ice routes. There is something for everyone, from easy scrambling such as Ledge Route, through some of the harder classics such as Observatory Ridge, North East Buttress and Castle Ridge. These cliffs really come into their own when covered in snow and ice and are by far the most reliable winter climbs in the UK. The huge icy cliffs are crawling with winter climbers from January through to April and now with the ever-increasing numbers of Back Country skiers, more and more of them are adventuring on to the North face of Ben Nevis.

So whether you want to walk your way to the top of the UK or Climb it by it's magnificent North face, 'the Ben' has something to offer everyone.
