Time spent with a qualified Scrambling guide or mountaineering Instructor is well spent, helping you to learn the basics or more.
Mountaineering and Scrambling are where the cross over between walking and climbing start to blur, your abilities to make decisions about the techniques you use can be the difference between staying safe and being back down before night time arrives. These courses look at everything from taking your first steps on more exciting terrain or improving your skills to move onto bigger and better things.
Introduction to scrambling courses.
A course for those people who have a broad experience of summer walking but would like to raise the level of challenge slightly. We will look at route finding, using guide books and movement skills over Grade I or II ground. Routes might include Ledge route and the C.M.D as an example. Ratio 1:4 max.
Mountaineering courses for intermediates.
This course will focus on the skills and ropework necessary for people to move onto Grade III ground and above. Skills we'll cover are tying onto the rope, belaying, pitching and placing of 'quick and easy' runners to keep you safe on the move. Ratio 1:4 max.
Advanced mountaineering ropework.
If you have plenty of experience on scrambling terrain and are confident with the basics of ropework, maybe you are looking at moving onto bigger things, like some of the UK's big mountain routes or going further afield. We will look at more advanced skills like taking chest and hand coils, 'moving together' and placing rock climbing gear, and taking you onto V.Diff terrain and above. Routes might be Observatory ridge or North East Buttress. Ratio 1:2 max.
